“תמה החודש – אוקטובר 2011 – ”ספורט

September 29, 2011

As I mentioned previously, I’ve decided that the theme of the month for October is going to be ‘sports’ (and not just because I have curling camp starting tomorrow night). The changing of the seasons has brought us around to the part of the year where most of the sport seasons in North America are running strong – Baseball is winding down to crowning a champion, the NFL is in full swing, the NHL is in pre-season, the NBA is imploding…

Since I started reading שער למתחיל a few months ago, I’ve noticed their regular column on soccer as the Israeli teams made it further in the European tournaments… but I could largely understand it, since that’s more basic hebrew. It’s when I started trying to take a stab at reading ישראל היום, with an actual sports-section, that I realized I don’t know anywhere near enough words to even start talking to someone about sports in Hebrew. That seems a serious lack in my education, so it was a second good reason to start with the topic.

So, the basic structure is going to be as follows.

I do feel strongly about trying to make it bite-sized vocabulary and usage to ensure that there’s plenty of ways for me to work the words into my Hebrew tweet-feed. I’m leaning towards doing either a verb or word(s) on a given limited topic on any given day. In the former, I’ll present the conjugations for the verb, sticking to a single binyan. In the latter, I’ll try to limit the number of words – for instance, if I’m talking football, I might give a few related terms for players on the team, or scoring, or the like.  I’m also going to start, probably in a month or so when I feel more comfortable, writing the monthly introductions more bilingually, with a Hebrew text before an English translation to build my competency.

I’m open to suggestions on tweaking structure, so please – if you have thoughts, let me know!
